Three Identical Strangers

Edward Galland, David Kellman, Robert Shafran
★★★★

Initially, we think this story is about one thing, then we think it’s about another thing. But really, this story is about something else entirely. As the story progresses, the discomfort becomes palpable.

Without getting into specifics that might ruin the film for somebody, I’ll just say that there are many things to consider once we understand what happened: how socio-economics and parenting styles affect children’s development, how things done “in the name of science” often have shady origins, nature vs nurture, how some people are able to justify almost anything, how big money enables individuals to do cruel things just for curiosity's sake, and how certain people are able to hide behind “I was just doing my job” while fundamentally affecting someone's life.

The story is well told. Netflix uses present-day interviews, re-enacted scenes, and archival footage recreate the story for us, which spans from the 1960s to 2018.

This is a beautiful and poignant story.
