The Prestige

Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, David Bowie
★★★★

Christian Bale seems like a very unlikeable person in real life, but there's no denying what an excellent actor he is. Like in his other movies, he really inhabits this role and is kind of scary.

I wasn't sure if supremely likeable Hugh Jackman would be able to hold his own across Christian Bale, but he does. He strikes the right tone with his character. You want to like him, but you just can't.

The script could have been better. There were so many scenes and plot decisions where they held the story together with a major "Poof!".

The story just doesn't hold up, but there are plenty of other things to admire. The hatred that held these two men together, for example. It's impressive!

And David Bowie is Nicola Tesla! How wonderful it is to see his face again. His acting is excellent. The voice and mannerisms he put on for the role are really great.

This is one of those movies that you think about for a while afterwards. There were so many counter-punches and bait and switches and... magic tricks, that I had to chat about it afterwards with my partner to totally understand it.

If one can forgive the huge plot holes, it's a good movie!
