The Gentlemen

Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Ferrell, Hugh Grant
★★★★

This is pure Guy Ritchie: excellent music during the action scenes, smart clothing, absurd interactions, uniquely memorable characters, and punchy dialog.

This movie spawned a television series that is basically the same story with some important distinctions. The protagonist in this is American which adds to the sense that he can be easily taken advantage of. And, while the ending of the series is clear, the ending of the movie is ambiguous.

Both have to do with the potential selling of a marijuana empire and involve underhanded people, treachery, blackmail, murder, scary Russians, and a gang of bumbling, violent idiots.

The acting in this is exceptional and includes some of the most handsome men in the industry. Like everything else Guy Richie does, this is fun, hard-hitting and intense although sometimes a challenge to follow.
