Inside Out 2
Cute! Initially, I felt the new characters might be a bit much for an adolescent. I mean, Ennui? What 12-year experiences existential boredom? I don’t know, but as the story progresses, we see the need for the balancing qualities of that character.
There were some really clever artistic decisions made about how to visualize certain things.
I like the way sarcasm is depicted as a chasm in the mind in which things said and heard are distorted by the distance. I also like the way they showed how beliefs are the roots and scaffolding of a person. That is absolutely true. I also like the way the subconscious mind is visualized as the far-reaches of the space inside the head.
The way they pulled the story together, it’s easy to see the value of keeping bad experience in the “active memory” bank. But that’s only valid when you’re 12. I think when we become adults, it’s actually better for us to push the memories of the time we said a dumb thing at a party, or had a bad job interview, or whatever to the back of the mind. As I understand it: wisdom is avoiding all thoughts that weaken you.
Anyway, regardless of my thoughts about the dubious value of bad memories, this is a solid movie.
The thing I liked the most about this film is that all the characters are female. The lead character isn’t discovering who she is in relation to a boy, but to herself, her sport and her friends.
