Dust Bunny
A very imaginative and visually rich film that does an exemplary job in getting us to ask what is real and what isn’t. The story hinges on a monster under the bed who keeps eating the orphan girl's parents.
The two lead actors, veteran Mads Mikkelsen and newcomer Sophie Sloan, have good synergy. It’s easy for the viewer to believe that they make a genuine connection.
Beyond the totally unique story the thing that hits us in the face is the absolutely beautiful gaudí-esque sets and the cinematography. The textures, wallpapers, clothes, even the way the food is arranged is stunning, and the framing of the scenes and camera angles is phenomenal.
The entire time I watched, I wondered where in Barcelona they filmed this, but a bit of research revealed it was shot in Budapest. Wow. Every shot is a visual feast rich in lovely shapes, patterns, and colors.
The story itself leaves us wondering. We have no mental model for its progression and conclusion. It’s a fantastic idea gorgeously brought to life.
