I watched this on the eve of the 2024 US presidential election hoping to add my energy to the idea of America’s first female president of color.

Regina King does an excellent job of bringing this formidable woman to life for a generation of people who probably have never heard of Shirley Chisholm.

‍

Ms Chisholm was the first Black woman to be elected to the congress. In 1972, she decided to run for the Democratic Party’s nomination and for the job of president.

‍

We get to see how she interacted with her inner circle, and the treachery of the false promises so common in politics.

‍

We also get a glimpse of how her family and husband responded to her push to make the most of herself and her life, and how she inspired a generation of women to enter politics.
