Joy - The Birth of IVF

Bill Nighy, Thomasin McKenzie, James Norton
★★★★

This is a bio-pic about the woman who spearheaded the effort of giving women more reproductive choice. She wasn’t a scientist but she had the people skills that made the team work.

The irony about her work on this project is that she was unable to have children of her own because of endometriosis. I was surprised to learn that endometriosis was a known issue all the way back in the 60s. It’s only relatively recently that medicine has taken this condition seriously, yet they’ve know about the serious consequences of it for decades!

This film shows the nitty gritty of what the team had to deal with, from finding the space to do their work, to organizing the women, to managing the press and religious leaders and their disingenuous arguments against it.

This is one of those films that needed to be made and needs to be seen to ensure that yet another important woman isn’t written out of history.
