Fool Me Once
I really enjoyed this thriller who-done-it. The casting is great, with a beautiful lead character who is also totally believable as a military helicopter pilot.
The sub-plots, some of which are purposeful dead-ends, add to the story without being obvious. The storytelling ranges from subtle visual suggestion, to hard character u-turns, to powerfully emotional scenes.
The story comes together slowly and there is plenty of tension in each episode, which is not to say it’s perfect storytelling. I sometimes judge a story by how many ‘poof!’s are used to keep the plot moving: how many times the viewer is asked to believe something that just wouldn’t happen in real life. There are a few “poof!”s in this, but not enough to stop watching it.
I would have binge-watched it if my partner would have been into it. Which is to say I was totally hooked on it, dreaming about it, thinking about it during the day and looking forward to watching another episode to get more information on who might have done it.
The last episode really delivers and keeps us in suspense until the last moments. It’s an emotional and satisfying end that is also heartbreaking. We remain impressed by the courage, toughness, and single-minded focus of the lead character.
